Speaker: Hey Binky wake up, it’s time for pointer fun!

Speaker: Well to get started, I guess we’re going to need a couple of pointers.

Binky: Ok! This code allocates two pointers which can point to integers.

Speaker: Ok! Well, I see the two pointers, but they don’t seem to be pointing to anything.

Binky: That’s right. Initially, pointers don’t point to anything. The things they’re pointing to are called pointees and sign them up is a separate step.

Speaker: Oh, right, right! I knew that; the pointees are separate. So how do you allocate a pointee?

Speaker: Hey look, there it goes! So doing a dereference on X follows the arrow access to its pointee; in this case to store 42 in there. Hey, try using it to store the number 13 through the other pointer, Y?

Binky: No, this doesn’t tack the pointees. It just changes one pointer to point to the same thing as another.

Speaker: Oh, I see. Now Y points to the same place as X. So, so, wait, now Y is fixed. It has a pointee. So you can try the one dereferencing again, to send the 13 over.

Speaker: Just remember the three pointer rules.

Number one: The basic structure is that you have a pointer and it points over to a pointee. But the pointer and the pointee are separate and the common error is to set up the pointer but to forget to give it the pointee.

Número uno: La estructura básica es aquella en la que tenemos un puntero y éste apunta al apuntado. Pero el puntero y el apuntado están separados y un error común es asignar valor al puntero antes de que apunte a un apuntado.

Number two: Pointer dereferencing starts at the pointer and follows it’s arrow over to access its pointee. As we all know, this only works if there is a pointee, which kind of gets back to rule number one.

Número dos: El referenciado de punteros comienza en el puntero y sigue la flecha para acceder al apuntado. Como todos sabemos, esto solo funciona si existe el apuntado, lo cual nos lleva a la primera regla.

Number three: Pointer assignment takes one and changes it to point to the same pointee as another pointer. So after the assignment, the two pointers will point to the same pointee. Sometimes, that’s called sharing. And that’s all there is to it. Bye, Bye now.
